A Shared Mission: Protecting Pets

This Saturday marks two important awareness days for pet lovers everywhere: World Stray Animals Day and Tag Day. These days share a powerful common goal: keeping pets safe and helping lost animals find their way back home.

As they fall on the same day this year, they highlight an important truth: many pets that end up as “strays” are actually lost pets without proper identification.

Why Identification Matters More Than You Think

Even the most careful pet owners can experience the unexpected. Indoor pets may slip out a door, escape during an emergency, or come loose from their collar when scared.

The good news? A simple combination of ID tags and microchips dramatically increases the chances of a happy reunion.

ID Tags: Your Pet’s First Line of Defense

A collar with an ID tag is the easiest way to ensure someone can quickly identify your pet and contact you right away.

Benefits of ID tags:

  • Immediate, visible identification
  • No special equipment needed to read the tag
  • Fast return if your pet is found nearby

However, tags aren’t foolproof:

  • Collars can fall off or break
  • Information on the tag can wear away over time

That’s why tags are essential, but they are not enough on their own.

Microchips: Permanent Protection That Travels With Your Pet

A microchip is a tiny device (about the size of a grain of rice) implanted just under your pet’s skin. It stores a unique ID number that can be read by a scanner at veterinary clinics and shelters.

Why microchips are so important:

  • Permanent identification (can’t fall off)
  • Tamper-proof and reliable
  • Widely used by shelters and clinics

If someone finds your pet, they can use the microchip number to locate your contact information in a database—allowing them to reunite you with your pet quickly.

In fact, studies show:

  • Pets without microchips have very low reunion rates
  • Microchipped pets are many times more likely to be returned home

Important Reminder: Registration is Key

A microchip only works if it’s properly registered. After your pet is chipped:

  • Ensure your contact details are entered into the database
  • Update information if you move or change phone numbers

Without registration, even a scanned chip won’t help reunite you with your pet.

Added Benefits of Microchipping

Microchips offer more than just peace of mind:

  • They are required for international travel in many countries.
  • They can integrate with microchip-activated pet doors for added security and convenience.
  • They can integrate with feeding stations to ensure your pets eat their own food and not another pet’s.

How You Can Help This Weekend

In honor of World Stray Animals Day and Tag Day:

  • Check your pet’s collar and tag: are they readable and up to date?
  • Confirm your pet’s microchip is registered and your contact info is current.
  • Book an appointment if your pet isn’t microchipped yet.
  • Share this message to help reduce the number of lost pets in your community

Every lost pet has a story, but with proper identification, it doesn’t have to end in separation.

By combining visible ID tags with permanent microchips, you’re giving your pet the best possible chance of making it back home—no matter what happens. Because at the end of the day, every pet deserves to be found.
